Loài Polygala senega thuộc họ Polygalaceae phân bố tại một số vùng trên thế giới như Canada, United States of America. Dược liệu đã được sử dụng ở một số vùng lãnh thổ để điều trị một số chứng và bệnh tại như ‘elsewhere: thuốc long đờm, chất độc, thuốc bổ’, ’japan*: thuốc long đờm’, ‘turkey: thuốc lợi tiểu, gây nôn, thuốc long đờm, có mùi hôi’.Từ loài này đã phân lập và xác định được 230 hoạt chất thuộc về 21 nhóm gồm benzene and substituted derivatives, benzodioxoles, benzothiazoles, carboxylic acids and derivatives, cinnamaldehydes, cinnamic acids and derivatives, coumarins and derivatives, diazines, dihydrofurans, fatty acyls, heteroaromatic compounds, indoles and derivatives, isocoumarans, lactones, naphthalenes, organooxygen compounds, phenol ethers, phenols, prenol lipids, steroids and steroid derivatives, unsaturated hydrocarbons.
