Loài Verbascum thapsus thuộc họ Scrophulariaceae phân bố tại một số vùng trên thế giới như France, Germany, United States of America, Spain, Russian Federation, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Austria. Dược liệu đã được sử dụng ở một số vùng lãnh thổ để điều trị một số chứng và bệnh tại như ‘elsewhere: làm dịu, thuốc diệt cá, thuốc trợ tim’, ‘eurasia: làm dịu, thuốc diệt cá, dễ bị tổn thương, thuốc đắp, chất làm mềm’, ‘india: thuốc kích thích tình dục, ma túy’, ‘turkey: thuốc lợi tiểu, chất làm mềm, thuốc long đờm, có mùi hôi, chất làm se, làm dịu, chất khử trùng’.Từ loài này đã phân lập và xác định được 110 hoạt chất thuộc về 7 nhóm gồm 2-arylbenzofuran flavonoids, cinnamic acids and derivatives, flavonoids, organooxygen compounds, prenol lipids, steroids and steroid derivatives, tannins.
