Loài Urtica dioica thuộc họ Urticaceae phân bố tại một số vùng trên thế giới như Germany, United States of America, Spain, Poland, Russian Federation, Colombia, Italy, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, Argentina, Austria, Ireland, Belgium. Dược liệu đã được sử dụng ở một số vùng lãnh thổ để điều trị một số chứng và bệnh tại như ‘canada(nootka): chất chống kích ứng’, ‘elsewhere: thuốc lợi tiểu, thuốc lợi tiểu, thuốc tẩy giun, diệt khuẩn’, ‘europe: mỹ phẩm, thuốc lợi tiểu’, ‘india: chất chống kích ứng, thuốc đạn’, ‘turkey: thuốc lợi tiểu, chất kích thích, thuốc bổ, thuốc co mạch, chất làm se, cầm máu, thuốc tẩy giun, emmenagogue, thuốc nhuận tràng’, ‘ain: dạ dày’.Từ loài này đã phân lập và xác định được 39 hoạt chất thuộc về 15 nhóm gồm 2-arylbenzofuran flavonoids, aryltetralin lignans, cinnamic acids and derivatives, coumarins and derivatives, dibenzylbutane lignans, fatty acyls, flavonoids, furanoid lignans, glycerophospholipids, organic phosphoric acids and derivatives, organonitrogen compounds, organooxygen compounds, phenols, prenol lipids, steroids and steroid derivatives.
