Loài Sambucus nigra thuộc họ Viburnaceae phân bố tại một số vùng trên thế giới như France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Switzerland, Mexico, Ukraine, South Africa, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Ecuador, Australia, Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Ireland. Dược liệu đã được sử dụng ở một số vùng lãnh thổ để điều trị một số chứng và bệnh tại như ‘elsewhere: đổ mồ hôi, thuốc lợi tiểu, gây nôn, thuốc nhuận tràng, chất kích thích, đổ mồ hôi, chất độc, có mùi hôi’, ‘europe: thuốc thanh lọc, đổ mồ hôi, chất độc, thuốc nhuận tràng, có mùi hôi, họ sẽ mở, đổ mồ hôi’, ‘france: thuốc thanh lọc, thuốc long đờm’, ‘iraq: có mùi hôi’, ‘turkey: gây nôn, chất làm mềm, thuốc long đờm, thuốc nhuận tràng, dạ dày, có mùi hôi, thuốc lợi tiểu’, ‘ain: có mùi hôi’.Từ loài này đã phân lập và xác định được 160 hoạt chất thuộc về 11 nhóm gồm 2-arylbenzofuran flavonoids, carboxylic acids and derivatives, dihydrofurans, fatty acyls, flavonoids, furanoid lignans, hydroxy acids and derivatives, organooxygen compounds, prenol lipids, saturated hydrocarbons, steroids and steroid derivatives.
